Acupuncture Q&A

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that involves restoring a harmonious balance of your flow of energy (known as qi) since disruptions in Qi can lead to pain and illnesses. Qi flows through meridians throughout your body.

By inserting very thin needles into various access points on your body, your acupuncturist can improve energy flow, which provides numerous health benefits. Acupuncture can help with any of the following ailments:

  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD)
  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Neck or back pain
  • Sprains and strains
  • Myofascial pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Knee pain
  • Migraine

Acupuncture is even beneficial for improving symptoms associated with allergies, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and morning sickness during pregnancy, to name a few.

What can I expect during an acupuncture session?

When you come into Greenwich Wellness for your acupuncture session, you meet with Dr. Massoud, who has a conversation with you about your health. He performs a comprehensive exam and works to pinpoint where you have problems, so he can better tailor your acupuncture session to your needs.

After your examination, Dr. Massoud steps out of the room so you can undress (if needed) and get comfortable on the table. Once you’re ready, he carefully inserts the fine acupuncture needles into specific points on your body.

You may need just a few acupuncture needles in a targeted area or several needles inserted head-to-toe. Once all of the needles are in place, you can relax or listen to music as your Qi improves. An entire acupuncture session typically takes about 20-40 minutes.

How often do I need acupuncture?

Ideally, you should visit Greenwich Wellness about once a week for acupuncture sessions, especially if you recently suffered from trauma or an injury. As your body continues to heal, you’re likely only going to need acupuncture treatments one or two times per month or as recommended.
